Increase in Indig medicos

The number of Indigenous medical practitioners is on the rise according to a new report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

The repost shows that the number of Indigenous GPs doubled between 1996 and 2006 from 41 to 82, and that the rate of Indigenous people with a post-school qualification has more than doubled to 6,300 in the same period.

The biggest increase has been in nursing. The numbers of Indigenous student completing medical studies also went up by 50 per cent between 2001 and 2006.
